30 Days of Claude All 30 days
Day 2 · Layer 1: Context

Chat, Cowork or Code

There are three separate versions of Claude. Nearly everyone opens one of them and never touches the other two, which is why they never see what it is actually built for.

Next: Day 3

The rule, first

If you take nothing else off this page, take this:

Which one do I open

A question, Chat.
A job that touches your files, Cowork.
A system that should run without you, Code.

Everything below is why, and how to get each one running.

Claude Chat

One-off questions and simple tasks. The way most people already use ChatGPT.

What it is: the conversation. claude.ai in a browser, or the app on your phone. You type, it answers, you copy the answer out and use it somewhere else.

What I use it for: this week I used it to structure an email I needed to send to a client. That is the shape of the job. Something I need thought about once, where the output is a few paragraphs I am going to paste somewhere myself.

Where it stops: the moment the job produces a file, or needs doing again next week, Chat starts costing you more than it saves. You end up copying things out by hand, and re-explaining the same background every time you open a new conversation.

Setting it up

  1. Sign in at claude.ai

Works on every plan, free included.

  2. Get the phone app

Same account, same memory, same Projects. Useful for the thinking you do away from the desk.

  3. Use a Project for anything you repeat

Even in Chat. A Project holds instructions and files so you stop re-explaining yourself. Day 3 covers this in full.

Claude Cowork

Bigger jobs, and anything that needs to save a file onto your computer. No code involved.

What it is: Claude working inside a folder on your own machine. You point it at a folder, it can read what is in there and write new files back into it. Nothing technical about it, and nothing that looks like programming.

It is in the desktop app and the phone app. The desktop is the one that reaches folders on your computer directly, so that is where you set it up.

What I use it for: this week, building my LinkedIn content calendar. It is a job with a lot of moving parts that ends in an actual file I need to keep. In Chat that ends in a lot of copying and pasting. In Cowork the file just appears in the folder.

Why it is the one most owners are missing: most of the work in a business ends in a document, a spreadsheet or a set of files. Cowork is the version of Claude that can hand you those directly instead of handing you text to move yourself.

Setting it up

  1. Install the desktop app

Download from claude.ai/download, Mac or Windows. Set it up here first, because the desktop is where Cowork can reach the folders on your computer. Once it is running you can check on a job from the phone app too.

  2. Open Cowork and connect a folder

You will be asked to trust a folder before it can read or write anything. Start with one real working folder, not your whole drive.

  3. Check what it can see

Ask it to list what is in the folder. Thirty seconds, and it tells you immediately whether you pointed it at the right place.

  4. Give it the job

Describe the outcome and say where to save it. The file lands in the folder while you watch.

Plan note

Cowork needs a paid plan. If you are still on free, this is the point where that stops you, and it is the same thing keeping a lot of owners stuck on Claude as a search box.

Claude Code

Agentic workflows and development. The one that actually runs my business.

What it is: Claude with the tools a backend software developer would use. It reads and writes your files, runs scripts, connects to your data, and completes tasks instead of telling you how to complete them.

What I use it for: everything that runs the company, video editing included.

What it is not: it is not only for developers, and you do not need to know how to code to use it. What it does need is a bit of patience in the first week and a business worth pointing it at. Day 5 is the full walkthrough, including the one file that makes it work.

Setting it up

  1. Pick how you want to run it

Claude Code comes as a desktop app for Mac and Windows, a command-line tool in your terminal, and an extension for VS Code and JetBrains. You can also pick your sessions up from the phone app. If you are not technical, start with the desktop app.

  2. Sign in with the same Claude account

It runs off your claude.ai login. There is no separate bill and no API key to buy.

  3. Open the folder your business lives in

One folder. Documents, spreadsheets, notes, whatever you actually work from.

  4. Give it context before you give it work

This is the step everyone skips, and it is the difference between Claude Code being impressive and being useful. That is Day 5.

The mistake almost everyone makes

They open the chat window, use it exactly the way they used ChatGPT, and judge Claude on that. Then they conclude it is much the same and go back to what they had.

They are not wrong about the chat window. Chat is broadly similar across the good models now. The difference is that two thirds of the product is somewhere they never looked, and it is the two thirds that does work rather than answers questions.

If you are only going to change one habit this week: the next time a job is going to end in a file, open Cowork instead of Chat.

The rest of the kit

Claude is one of five tools I would actually put in a small business. The others, what each one is genuinely good at, and what each one will not do, are in The Tool Stack.
