What changed
The Claude mobile app used to be good for using Claude like ChatGPT. You could get to your old chats and some of your projects, and that was about it. Your real setup, the one in Claude Code with your files, your commands and your connected tools, stayed on the laptop.
Remote Control changes that. As long as your laptop's running, you can carry on whatever you were doing in Claude Code straight from your phone. Before this, the only way to do that was to build your own connection through something like a Telegram bot. Now it's built in.
The steps
This is the reel, written down.
-
Switch it on
In the Claude Code session you're working in, type this and press enter. It works in the terminal, in VS Code and in the Claude desktop app.
The command/remote-control
The shorter
/rcdoes the same thing. -
Pick it up on your phone
Open the Claude mobile app, tap Code and pull down to refresh. The session you were just working on appears in the list, with a computer icon and a green dot while it's online. Tap it and carry on.
Shortcut: if you're in the terminal, press the space bar after switching it on. It shows a QR code you can scan with the Claude app to jump straight into the session.
Keep your laptop awake
Remote Control only works while the session is running on your laptop. If the laptop goes to sleep, your phone loses it. So set it to stay awake while it's plugged in.
- Windows: Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts. Set "When plugged in, put my device to sleep after" to Never. The screen can still turn off; that's fine.
- Mac: System Settings → Battery → Options. Turn on "Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off".
Leave the session open too. Closing the terminal, VS Code or the desktop app ends it.
Switch it on for every session
If you'd rather not type the command each time, you can have every Claude Code session start with Remote Control already on.
- In the terminal: type
/configand turn on "Enable Remote Control for all sessions". - In the Claude desktop app: Settings → Claude Code → Enable remote control by default.
What you need
- A Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise Claude plan, signed in with your Claude account. It doesn't work if you use Claude Code with an API key.
- On a Team or Enterprise plan, the account owner has to switch it on in the admin settings first.
- The Claude mobile app, updated to the latest version.
Is it safe?
Everything still runs on your laptop: your files, your tools and the work itself. Your phone is just a window into the session. Nothing on your laptop is opened up to the internet, and the connection goes through your own Claude account.
A session you can reach from your phone can do anything the session on your laptop can. Keep your phone locked, and keep an eye on anything Claude asks permission for before you tap yes.
When a Telegram bot still makes sense
I ran my business from my phone through a Telegram bot before this existed, and for most people Remote Control now does the job without building anything. A custom bot is still worth it if you want other people on your team to use it, or if you want something that answers when the laptop is off, running on a server instead.
Where this goes
Now your setup goes wherever you do. Next, Day 16 is about work that happens without you asking at all: scheduled tasks.
